Car phone mounts: vent, dash, cup holder or magnetic?
Every car interior is different, which is why phone mounts have so many bad reviews. Pick the mount type that matches your car first, then pick the product.
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Air vent | Easy install, phone near eye line | Round or thin vent slats; heat blowing on the phone in winter; heavy phones can droop |
| Dashboard (suction or adhesive) | Stable, good viewing angle | Textured or curved dashes; suction weakens in heat; adhesive can mark some surfaces |
| Cup holder | Very stable, works in any car | Uses a cup holder; phone sits low, so more glancing down |
| Magnetic (including MagSafe) | One-hand on and off | Needs a compatible phone or case, or a metal plate |
Check your car first
- Vents: look at the slat shape. Round vents need a mount made for them; hook-style clips grip better than simple clips.
- Dash: run your finger over it. Suction cups struggle on textured dashes unless the kit includes a smooth adhesive disc.
- Windshield: rules on windshield mounts vary by state and country. Check your local rules before mounting on the glass.
Check your phone
- Large phones in thick cases need a cradle with a wide enough range and a strong grip.
- For magnetic mounts, your phone or case needs a magnet ring. A thick non-magnetic case will weaken the hold.
- Wireless-charging mounts need the coil lined up with your phone's coil and a car charger with enough power.
The safety part
Set up navigation before you drive and keep the phone where you can glance without looking away from the road for long. A mount should hold the phone still over bumps; if it wobbles, it's distracting.
